Custom Uchiwa for Sawaichi
At Uchiwa Ota-ya, we create custom Edo Uchiwa tailored to a variety of purposes and environments.
Below are selected examples of past works—each crafted with care and attention to detail.
We hope they will serve as inspiration for your own original design.
Examples of Custom Edo Uchiwa
This original uchiwa was created for Sawaichi, a refined Japanese restaurant in Roppongi.
Inspired by the restaurant’s elegant and serene Japanese interior, the fan is dyed in a deep shade using Suruga tea dye, blending the traditional techniques of Boshu Uchiwa with a regional craft from a different part of Japan.
Its warm, subdued tones complement the tranquil ambience of the counter seating and private rooms, reflecting the tasteful depth unique to tea-dyed washi.
Each fan is finished by hand with care—an exclusive piece designed especially for Sawaichi.
Ginka
This custom uchiwa was created for Ginka, a distinguished high-end club in Ginza with over 20 years of history.
To match the club’s refined atmosphere and the sophistication expected in Ginza, the fan is dyed in a deep, elegant indigo.
The rich, layered tones of the indigo capture the essence of the brand’s prestige, while the traditional craftsmanship of Boshu Uchiwa brings texture and character to each hand-finished piece.
It is a bespoke creation made exclusively for Ginka.
Rodpiss
This custom fan was created for Rodpiss, an exclusive high-end club in Ginza.
Its design draws inspiration from the club’s namesake—the “Desert Rose,” a figure rooted in ancient Egyptian legend and often referred to as the world’s first Cinderella. She is remembered as a noble and mysterious beauty who bloomed with grace in the harshness of the desert.
Honouring this elegant mythology, the fan features delicately cut washi paper on the front, layered with traditional yukata fabric on the reverse. The overlapping textures reveal subtle expressions as the light shifts, much like a rose blooming quietly in the night.
This one-of-a-kind piece was crafted to resonate with the refined atmosphere and unique identity of Rodpiss.
